A Return to Primal Rage

Thou’s “Umbilical” is a visceral gut punch, a return to their hardcore roots steeped in the sludge metal they’ve mastered. Clocking in at a concise 48 minutes, it’s a potent display of raw aggression and emotional turmoil, a stark contrast to their more experimental ventures in recent years.

The album opens with “Narcissist’s Prayer,” a self-flagellating declaration of shortcomings, setting the tone for the introspective yet fiercely critical lyrics. Bryan Funck’s vocals are a trademark shriek, a torrent of disgust and despair that perfectly complements the pummeling riffs and thunderous drumming. Tracks like “Unbidden Guest” and “I Feel Nothing When You Cry” are relentless assaults, driven by Tyler Coburn’s explosive percussion and churning guitars. These are not songs for the faint of heart, but for those seeking catharsis through sonic brutality, “Umbilical” delivers in spades.

Despite the overwhelming aggression, “Umbilical” isn’t without nuance. “The Promise” throws a curveball with Emily McWilliam’s ethereal vocals amidst a hardcore breakdown, a surprising moment of melancholic beauty. While not a radical departure, the album refines Thou’s sound, injecting a shot of adrenaline that reinvigorates their established formula.

For longtime fans, “Umbilical” is a welcome reminder of Thou’s ability to conjure pure sonic devastation. The stripped-down approach and emphasis on raw emotion make this a strong entry point for newcomers seeking an introduction to the band’s intense and uncompromising sound. “Umbilical” may not be for everyone, but for those seeking a cathartic release through sonic warfare, it’s a triumph.
