“White” (featuring Canadian folk metal artist Ember Belladonna) is the lead single off of Spectrum, the debut full-length by Steve Wiener’s (Negative Bliss) experimental black metal band Am I in Trouble?. Spectrum is the debut album by Am I in Trouble?, an erratic journey through colorful black corners of metal. A love-letter to the eclecticism and experimentation displayed in the early-to-mid 2000s avantgarde black metal explosion. Deeply influenced by the works of artists active during this time, however, the goal was not to recreate and imitate these bands—but rather, to extract elements from their approaches to creation—and in doing so, develop something new— filtered through the unique vision of multi-instrumentalist Steve Wiener. Despite Am I in Trouble? being a solo project, there is a keen emphasis on collaborative and guest contributions. The most foundational of which is the incredible drum performance by UK drummer Chris Barber. Chris took every drum arrangement in expert stride, breathing incredible life into every moment. Canadian folk metal artist Ember Belladonna contributes flute to three tracks. Inspired deeply by the synth-based flute arrangements by Lars Nedland throughout Borknagar and Solefald’s careers; a goal on Spectrum was to see that approach brought to life with real flutes. Ember beautifully accomplished that goal. What good is being in multiple bands if you can’t feature your bandmates as guests? Co-lead vocalist / bassist, Jonathan Hernandez, and co-guitarist Paul Shryock, of Steve’s other band, Negative Bliss each feature on tracks, contributing parts that—despite solo projects being wonderful in their one way—are a firm reminder of the magic that only comes from being in a band with other people. UK vocalist Alex Loach of Ashenheart rounds out the guest list, providing his trademark venomous shrieks to Black. Spectrum is a deliberately disparate, vivid and varied musical journey. This is the third single and sixth work of the Void Sinker project released this year, “Sunless.” A doom drone metal experiment born from this cursed heat that we have experienced in recent years; written on a particularly hot day where I literally couldn’t breathe, it was so hot that I felt like I was having mystical visions. Furthermore, “Moonless,” an experiment inspired by the more psychedelic sounds of Earth born from the desire to try something new; it’s not the first time I’ve experimented with similar sounds, those who follow me on SoundCloud will know, but I wanted to try to release something similar and actually see how it went… I hope you like it. Solo artist Ember Belladonna has unveiled her video for “The Unnamed”. The whimsical song stands out as a highlight from her critically acclaimed debut album, The Grove, a collection of tracks steeped in themes of fantasy and folklore. The music video was filmed in the Qu’Appelle region of Saskatchewan, combining fantasy music with a beautiful prairie landscape. Emerging metal act Heteromorphic Zoo, from Victoria, BC, Canada, is set to captivate audiences with their debut EP New World, produced by Chris Wiseman (Shadow of Intent, Currents) plus mixed and mastered by Christian Donaldson (Cryptopsy). Coinciding with the EP launch, the band has unveiled the music video for their single “Ritual of Fidelity”, which they comment on: “This song is about an ancient power awakening within a great tomb, filled with monsters. The leaders declare their loyalty (or fidelity) to the overlord. Musically, the actual “ritual of fidelity” takes place in the middle of the song. It’s a classical 3-voice fugue between the violin, lead guitar, and rhythm guitars + bass with a subject, tonal response, 2 counter subjects, and everything. Of course, it’s not a pure fugue since other instruments are also playing, but that’s the skeleton of it, and the callback to an old baroque form brings out the ritualistic nature of the song.” “Ritual of Fidelity” has a memorable lead guitar melody during its chorus, chuggy yet melodic verse riffs, and an overall more neoclassical sound. The violin is fairly subdued and in the background until the moment of the ritual fugue, since that moment is meant to introduce it to the listener for the first time. Born from a desire to create “Worship Music for Monsters”, Heteromorphic Zoo’s five-track EP showcases a diverse and extreme sound that pushes the boundaries of modern metal. Lyrically, “New World” tells the story of a grand alliance of monstrous beings invading a new realm, with perspectives shifting between the monsters, their overlord, and their enemies. The band’s innovative approach combines groove and melody, intricate riffs, and powerful breakdowns, resulting in a sonic experience that defies easy categorization. French post-black metallers Silhouette reveal the new video for the song “Silhouette.” The track is the second to be revealed from the band’s highly anticipated debut album, Les Dires de l’Ame, set for international release on October 20th via Antiq. Born in 2019 in Montpellier, the French sextet of Silhouette were able to make a name for themselves with the debut EP Les Retranchements, released in 2022 by Antiq, and build up a strong live experience at several events in France. With their incisive, post-metal-tinged black metal and the strength of their two singers, Ondine and Yharnam, the band invites introspection and tackles the theme of dreams, nightmares, and lost ones. Now, two years after that celebrated EP, Silhouette will release their debut album, Les Dires de l’Ame. Taking listeners on a long, dreamlike journey, the band’s first full-length spans extremes of sound – beauty to darkness, violence to repose – and shows Silhouette masterfully combining a black metal base with the skyscraping melodicism of shoegaze and the deft textural shifts of post-rock. Although comprising ten songs across 46 minutes, the album feels far more epic than that conventional construction may suggest; Silhouette’s songwriting simply stuns with its acute balance of drama and flow, hypnotizing and dazzling at every turn. The same can be said for the layered dual vocals of Ondine and Yharnam, working a stronger spell that’s at times almost crushingly beautiful. But to call Les Dires de l’Ame a “black metal” record or especially a “post-metal” one misses the point: while the destination is no less important, that journey the band take you on is, in essence, the “destination.” Either way, Silhouette now come strongly recommended to fans of Alcest, Sylvaine, Cult of Luna, Amenra, and Darkher.
