Smoke // Doomsday Profit (Split Album)

Smoke (VA) & Doomsday Profit (NC) combine forces for a Split LP of Southern psych and doom, out Oct. 25 via Olde Magick Records Rising psychedelic doom bands Smoke (Lynchburg, Va.) and Doomsday Profit (Durham, N.C.) are pleased to announce the release of a split album, set for release on Oct. 25 via Olde Magick Records. The LP marks the first time either band will have their music available on vinyl, and includes five previously unreleased songs, as well as a re-mastered version of Smoke’s digital-only single “Scavenger.” Both Smoke and Doomsday Profit have earned accolades for their previous efforts, but are taking big leaps on this split. Drawing from deep wells of Southern sludge and dark psychedelia, the split release builds upon the promise of both bands’ early efforts with an increasingly exploratory approach to doom, sludge, and heavy psych — both heavier and spacier than the releases that preceded it. The strains of doom, stoner-rock, sludge, heavy psych and Southern metal that course through the split should appeal to fans of acts as disparate as All Them Witches and Buzzov-en. Gone Dark (Album) by Human Impact

Human Impact, the laser-precision noise-rock alliance of Unsane frontman Chris Spencer, Cop Shoot Cop’s squall-maker Jim Coleman, Made Out of Babies’ Eric Cooper and Daughters’ Jon Syverson, release Gone Dark, the band’s second full-length album out Oct 4th, 2024. Gone Dark is a fiercer, tighter upgrade of their taut grooves, brittle guitar shards, impassioned shouts and clouds of dystopian noise. Not a cry from the darkness but a shout through the darkness, a robust proclamation of resilience and opposition in the face of impending apocalypse. It follows their self-titled debut, which was released on the eve that the world stood still, and was followed by a slew of singles which culminated in the the release of EP01 in 2021 and touring in 2022. The band graced the cover of New Noise Magazine (France) and were featured in a New York Times article amongst other recognition. “We were all looking to go with something more raw and aggressive than the previous releases.” adds Spencer. “There was a real desire to capture more of what the live performances had been like. With this one, we had plenty of time to develop a full, cohesive album joining songs together with interstitial pieces more like a live performance would be. With Gone Dark we have arrived at a place where we fully understand who we are as a band, so it’s a bit more focused and relentless.” The Human Impact arsenal is more formidable than ever thanks to the addition of bassist Eric Cooper (Made Out of Babies, Bad Powers) and drummer Jon Syverson (Daughters). Spencer had spent the 2020 Covid lockdown working on a cabin in the East Texas woods and would travel into Austin for informal jam sessions with the pair in the bass player’s garage. Friendly blasts through vintage Unsane songs ultimately resulted in the rhythm section being fully absorbed into the Unsane and Human Impact lineups for their 2022 European tours. Party At Sea (Video) by Go Betty Go

Los Angeles-based Go Betty Go is set to release their new EP, Black & Blue, via Wiretap Records on September 13. The EP features six tracks, including two newly recorded live-show fan favorites from early in the band’s career. Black & Blue was produced by Davey Warsop (The Used, Face to Face, Chuck Ragan, Matt Skiba). Pre-save it here. Go Betty Go’s music is driven by Betty Cisneros’ roaring guitar, Nicolette Vilar’s soulful vocals, the momentous urgency of Michelle Rangel’s bass, and Aixa Vilar’s tumultuous drumming. Nicolette shares, “Black & Blue is an EP that has been a long time in the making. We started working on these songs as soon as the pandemic broke out but had to pause like everyone else in the world at that time. As soon as it was clear to get back together and work in the studio, we received Betty’s Stage 4 cancer diagnosis in May 2022, which hit us all hard. But from that day forward, we decided we would stand strong and do everything in our power to help Betty fight and overcome cancer. It even sparked old ideas that we finally brought to the light of day. Two of the songs, “City Lights” and “Am I To Blame,” were written years ago when Emily Wynne-Hughes, aka Emily Valentine, was in the band. We have a two-decade-long history, but there was a moment when I quit the band, and Emily stepped in to take the reins. I’ve been back for many years, but this EP brought the band’s history full circle as we invited Emily to come back and rework some of those old original songs that had never been released.” She continues, “We’re proud of the EP; it has a strong backbone full of grit and determination, reflecting the struggles we all went through as we wrote and recorded these songs. Black & Blue is a reference to the bruises life dealt us during these past difficult years. We heal from bruising, and even though it was challenging to make this EP, we overcame it.” Go Betty Go first stepped into the Los Angeles music scene in 2000 when they were attending high school in Glendale, CA. Boterham (Video) by Pruillip

Pruillip is a fairly new Belgian band founded by Louis Evrard (Bert Dockx Band, Grid Ravage, Ottla) and Annelies Van Dinter (Echo Beatty, Takh & Naga Ghost). The duo started about two years ago after a request to play at De Nor, the open-air sculpture park and venue of Dennis Tyfus. For this occasion, Annelies and Louis decided to do a position switch and play each other’s instruments: Annelies beating the hell out of the drums and Louis ripping up the guitar. Their music may be described best as “compelling,” “hypnotic,” “loud” and reminiscent of the sound of the legendary Earth from the ’90s. Legion of Bottom Deck Dealers (Video) by Mamaleek

Loss has informed Mamaleek’s newest full-length album, Vida Blue. Tragedy struck in March of 2023 when the band lost a longtime friend and member, keyboardist Eric Livingston, leaving the group, which began as a duo of two brothers and later expanded to a five-piece, with only four members. Despite this profound loss, Mamaleek persevered, performing as a quartet at various festivals, including a ground-shaking performance at the 2023 edition of Roadburn. Following, Mamaleek returned to the studio to create new material that appropriately reflects their journey through loss and honors their fallen comrade. The resulting album draws inspiration from the legacy of Oakland A’s baseball legend Vida Blue, whose former team coincidentally announced its relocation to Las Vegas that same year. The band members themselves describe this poignant chapter in their own words: “Time is a slippery fish. Maybe only someone like Vida could grasp it. Although he’s left time behind, his image and that lefty heat remain in the memories of many. Eventually they’ll be forgotten, and hopefully replaced with even more exultant ones. This musical recording is a reflection on loss and its acceptance. We explore several examples for each song, including the loss of pride, of money, of glory, of country, of sanity, of a favorite sports team, of significant others, and, every day, one’s self. It also explores various associated moods–fear, panic, reverence, stoicism, and steadfastness–to arrive at a resolution: Loss is only a test, the glue that holds and erodes each memory, the connection that binds and loosens us all, pitch by pitch, inning by inning. ‘This is your celebration.'” Today, the album’s third single “Legion of Bottom Deck Dealers” arrives alongside a music video directed by legendary Bay Area multi-disciplinary artist Henry Kaiser.
